March 2011 - NBBS Judges Course

A most successful Judging Course was held on 10 and11 March 2011 at the farm Ghaub of Mr. Andre Compion near Grootfontein.

Record attendance of 36 participants was recorded whilst many prospective participants had to be declined due to restricted capacity. Mr Siggy von Luttwitz as Head Presenter was ably assisted by 3 heavyweights in the Namibia cattle judging industry in the persons of Messrs Reini Rusch, Willie Grobler and Barend Dorfling.

Participants with diverse levels of experience arrived from all over Namibia, including married couples form as far as Gobabis and Otjiwarongo and interbreed judges. Breeders and judges from other breeds were also in attendance, demonstrating the enormous interest in the value which Brahman cattle can add to any other breed in a cross-breeding programme.

Under the competent guidance of the presenters breed characteristics were thoroughly discussed and demonstrated with specific focus on breed objects and selection criteria. After an introductory theoretical session participants were subjected to a thorough practical kraal session. Each participant was adequately equipped not only for future involvement in show judging but also with the means to critically evaluate those aspects on which we as Brahman breeders concentrate in Namibia, in their own herds.

The Brahman breed`s hardiness and adaptability was clearly illustrated by the herd at Ghaub which was moved from a sandy Hochfeld farm only a year ago and which are now completely at home in the rough Otavi Mountains-area.

Participants could heartily socialize in-between the working sessions and enjoyed the unique beauty of this very special area. Everyone was undoubtedly well equipped to travel along with the Brahman breed on the exciting road into its Southern African future.
