January 2010 - Judges & Inspectors Conference The Namibian Brahman Breeders Association held its annual Judges & Inspectors Conference on the farm of well known Brahman breeder, Mr. Jörg Schlüder, in the Grootfontein district on 20 & 21 January 2010. The conference was well attended with 24 judges, inspectors and breeders participating.
Widespread and almost continues rains fell for the two days of the conference but could not dampen the heated debate and discussion among the conference goers, under the newly erected veranda, on the following points on the agenda.
Judging criteria and standards.
The use of Breedplan and EBV’s in the show ring.
Gene marker technology and the way forward for the Brahman breed.
Breedplan Bull of the year during Windhoek Show.
Breeders Objectives of the Namibian Brahman.
Breed Object expressed as breeding values (Ebv’s).
Breed standards, where does the Brahman have a competitive advantage and where does it need to improve.
Inspection Criteria.
Evaluation of Inspectors based on inspections done during 2009.
New markets for Brahman cattle in Africa.
Judges and inspectors were also given a practical demonstration on some of the major points discussed during the conference and asked to judge some of the Brahman cattle provided by Mr. Schlüder.
At the end of the conference all that attended was in agreement that it was a very informative and meaning full couple of days and that the Brahman breed remains the best breed for breeding beef from grass under extensive Namibian and African conditions, but that Brahman breeders, judges and inspectors have a big responsibility in insuring that the Namibian Brahman continues to grow and develop in the right direction.
To Jörg Schlüder and daughter Laura, of Lone Star Brahman Stud, a big thank you for your hospitality and putting your cattle and home at our disposal.
