September 2024 - AgriForum October2024 - Brahman Section Real performers: Why it works
The Brahman with its highly developed environmental adaptation and beef-producing ability crossed with genetically unrelated British or European breeds of the Bos Taurus group produces the maximum amount of hybrid vigour in the offspring.
Research by the CSIRO has shown that these Brahman hybrid cattle actually retain almost all of the adaptive characteristics of the Brahman parent, which makes them better able to withstand conditions of stress. They also retain almost all of the production potential of the Bos Taurus parent, which gives them the ability to outstrip the weight gains of both parents by 12 to 2%. Figures as high as 30% have been achieved.
